Split-level plan

How should I create a split-level plan? In my current project I have parts
of the first floor plan in street level and the rest half storey higher.
Everything looks ok in plan view if I simply ignore the differences in
levels and keep everything in zero level, but this way 3d is unusable. If I
move a half-flight stair in z coordinate, it has this new z in plan view
also. If I have understood the principles of ADT right, all AEC object sould
have a flat appearance in plan view and different appearences in section or
perspective views.
