Layer Lexicon 3.0 does just that. You can create your
own groups with your own layers and descriptions, and with the click of a button
generate a list like the one below. But that's not the best part.
LL3.0 is a dictionary where users can simply double click on a layer name in the
group and the user is prompted to select object(s) to be on that layer. As
the user scans the group he/she can see each layers description, color &
linetype, or they can click the same inventory button to generate this list
themselves. AND this tool floats on the AutoCAD screen for quick access.

There! Does anyone know if it is at all possible to export layer names
into a word document so that a list can be drawn up of what elements should be
on that layer for distribution to other team members. Aec 5.1 used to have
aliasing. I am trying rather unsuccessfully to get everyone in the office
to use BS1192 layering, e.g. A525G7EAX, (Elevation of Existing Rainwater
Goods). It would be extremely useful to be able to export layer names and
a description to preferably a Word document or secondly a spreadsheet.
Your comments are eagerly awaited. RLW
