Hi Ray

I though this was a function of the Software not Windows. I've never had
thumbnails with Autosketch 8 or AutoSketch 9 but then I save in 'CAD'
format.

However I have now discovered that saving in SKF format with V8 or V9 does
save thumbnails! So I've learnt something today, thank you...

I uninstalled Version 9,Installed Ver 8 and the thumbnails showed up. Re
installed Ver 9 and all is well.
So I assume Version 9 does not have this feature?/??

Ray

I've just tried it on a 'clean' install of AS9 and you're quite correct it
doesn't support preview, so its either been removed or its a 'bug'.

Sorry to say, Ray, that it's nonsense, not to put
too fine a point on it. OF COURSE V9 supports
previews. I don't know if will preview dwg or
other formats you import into Sketch. But the
feature works.

As a check, you might try the Templates tab in the
Startup Screen. Click on any of those templates
and see if you get the preview. If not, sumpin'
really wrong. Don't forget that the Standard Blank
Drawing doesn't support "Preview."

Could this be a Sketch beta? Or a foreign version?
Wouldn't know about those either.

AAMOF, there's a lot I don't know about.

Paul, Rod or Ric might know more info about why a
preview wouldn't show on your version. Could be a
dud, unlikely though.

No it isn't Harvey!

Harvey, I think you're on a different wavelength to Ray and me!

We're talking about the file and folders task preview in a Windows XP
Explorer window, NOT the preview in the AS 'file open' dialog.

And, of course, even the AS file open dialog won't preview files from
earlier versions of AS/Drafix CAD.

Hope that clears up any confusion.

OK I give. Why do you need Explorer thumbnails
when the FilePreview works nicely for that?

Maybe because you don't want to open the program
to see what you've drawn and the name isn't
explicit enough?

Am I close?

Hi Harvey,

I don't know, I don't use them myself other than for photos, IMHO they're
just a gimmick. Perhaps Ray'll enlighten us.

But I was pleased to help in a small way with his problem.

Gents
when you have several projects for one client it is some times easier to
look thru the thumbnails to see which set of drawings (done up to years ago)
is the project they may want additions or alterations to.
It all works since I installed Ver 8 first.I don't know why they would
exclude this feature in Ver 9????

Are you certain it's the ADSK program rather than
the OS? It occurs that maybe you have installed an
update to Windows that doesn't support SKF
drawings in Explorer>Thumbnail.

It could be that SP-2 for XP is installed. I know
that Thumbnail doesn't work in my system with
SP-2. (BTW, I let Windows install whatever OS
update it wants, whenever it wants. Maybe that's
wrong, but somehow I just can't be bothered to
fiddle with it.)

What OS were you using with AS V-8? Is it the same
with V-9?

Just a thought.

The thing is, one can't be sanguine about these
newer operating systems, nor can one be certain
that older applications will work with them. Many
times people complain here about AS-2 (of all
things) that it doesn't seem to work with XP. I
mean, "It worked fine with my 386 machine, but now
it's broke!" Duh.

Agree with the gimmick aspect, but I have to admit
that Ray has a point. To each his own, these
programs can't be all things to all peeps.

Strange to me. You say in that post that all is
well with V9. No comprende.

Well, I guess you should be using V8 if that suits
you. Are there features in V9 you need that are
not there in V8?

I say all is well only after installing Ver 8 then Ver 9.
Installing ver 9 on its own wont work.

Has anyone come across a solution for this issue? I recently upgraded the same PC from V8 to V9 & my thumbnails are gone. I still have V8 & V9, but the brass has purchased the "current" software and wants it implemented. They (and I) also want thumbnails of the drawings from Windows Explorer.

Thanks,
Dan

AS9 has 'broken' this feature. You can get it back by reinstalling AS8, I
have both versions loaded at the moment, but I'm not sure what happens if you
subsequently remove AS8.

That's quite a disappointment, to lose a seemingly basic feature by purchasing an upgrade. Thanks for the reply all the same. I take it there are no complications having both versions installed?

The only thing to atch out for is the file associations, you may have to
reinstall AS9 after installing AS8 to ensure that AS9 opens the files from
Explorer?

I resintalled V8 while actually running V9. I've got all my thumbnail views back, and a double click from explorer still defaults to V9.

Problem officially jury-rigged, though I'm still disappointed with this new release of the software. Our reseller is really good, they'll take the software back. I'm not sure that would go over too well in-house, however.

File association can be done any number of ways
within XP, you don't have to install other
versions of AS.

Try going to Explore or My Computer, click on a
drawing, right-click and choose "Open with..." and
choose the installed program you want that type of
file to be opened by. Then all other files of that
same type will be opened by that program. That's
the easiest.

A bit more sophisticated, would be to open the
Control Panel>FolderOptions and choose the File
Type tab. There you can surf to the SKF file,
click on it and choose Change or Advanced,
whatever suits.
