AutoSketch

Hello all,

I hope I can express myself clearly enough. It's quite difficult for me
to work with technical applications like Autosketch and to express what
I wan't from it. Well, I'll just give it a try:

I wan't to use Autosketch 2.1 to do interior drawings (rooms to be
carpeted).

My sheet size is always A4, sometimes tall, sometimes wide.

I prefer to have Grid and Snap enabled.

I would like the distance between every dot to represent 0.25 meter.

When I draw a line, I would like tom right away, to be able to see the
lenght of the line in metres, in the coordination display.

I'm very thrilled with the Measure tool and I would like to be able to
use both Aligned, Vertical and Horizontal Dimension so that it will give
me the actual length in metres.

How should my Settings be to meet all these wishes?

To set the grid spacing to 0.25m, select Custom > Drawing Settings >
Grid/Snap and enter 250mm for X and Y and check 'Grid=Snap'. The grid
will now display (depending on your sheet scale - File > Sheet Setup >
Sheet Scale).

To see the length of a line being drawn you need to set Relative (Rel)
coords in the Coord Type/Display (in the middle top menu area). Click on
the Coord Type (Abs, Pol, Rel, Last, Off) until 'Rel' is displayed.

For dimensions to be displayed in metres rather than millimetres you
will need to adjust your units. Go to Custom > Drawing Settings > Units
> Unit Type, Standard and from the pull down list select 'Meters'.

Dear Ian Fenton,

Thanks a lot for your response, it is much appreciated!

You have solved most of my problems. I do however still the have the one
regarding scaling (I think it is scaling, but not sure), I'll try to
specify:

I create a new drawing file with default Grid Spacing set to 10mm. I set
the Coord to Rel and the Unit Type to Meters and decimal precision is
set to 0.01. Sheet Size is A4 Tall and Sheet Scale 1:1. Grid and Snap is
enabled. I realize that after changing Unit Type to meters the Grid
spacing shows 0.01m.

If I now draw a horizontal line from 0 to 10 on the ruler this is
indicated as 0.10m. Instead of 0.10m I would like this line to be shown
as 2.5m both on the Ruler on top, in the Coord. display and with the
measure tool. Is this possible?

I do not think you can work like that. In AutoSketch you draw objects to
represent their real-world size. When you print, you scale the drawing
to fit your paper or direct AutoSketch to print as many pages as needed
for your drawing.

Refer to the AutoSketch help section titled Setting Up Drawings -
Working with Sheet Size and Scale for more help.

Ian,
is it possible for you to clarify how the "snap" functions have changed
in AS7 ?? Is it now similar to AcadLt ?

I need to make a change very soon from an Ashlar product called Drawing
board to another product. DBoard was a fabulous program that "drew" like
the wind because of its drawing "aids" (alignment indicators). To my
understanding, some of AS features are licensed from Ashlar.

Can you share any details as to whether any additional "help" has been
added along the lines of alignment indicators aside from what is applied
in AS6 ? I have AS6 now, and amazed at the features for the price. I
like it much better than AcadLt for what I need to do.

If AS7 is at least similar in "snapping", I am ready to purchase
immediately.

Here are the new snap/selection features in AutoSketch Release 7:

Enhanced AutoSnaps
MultiSnap mode allows you to use several snaps simultaneously, allowing
you to draw complete entities without pausing to switch between snaps.
MultiSnap mode allows you to select almost any combination of snaps
while you're drawing. You can click on a toolbar or use the keyboard to
toggle snaps on and off independently, or turn off all snaps by typing
S. If you type S again, all snaps from the previous snap set are
reactivated (i.e. you can have as many snap modes selected permanently
and also set that selection as the default for all drawings, just like
in AutoCAD LT).

Enhanced AutoPoint Indicators
These coloured indicators provide visual feedback to you during
coordinate input. The indicator changes shape based on the snap point.

GetNext Selection
If entities overlap, you can use GetNext selection to cycle through the
overlapping entities by pressing ALT as you click. When you release the
ALT key the highlighted entity is selected.

With regards to alignment indicators, I'm not quite sure what you mean
(lock modifiers maybe?). If you are referring to the Polar Snap features
in AutoCAD LT, then I can't see an equivalent in AutoSketch 7.

Has this replaced the older method or do the keyboard snaps work as they did
before? I do not like the AutoCAD LT AutoSnaps and would rather just input
the snap I want with one keystroke.

Len,
No this has not replaced the previous method - you can disable the
MultiSnap function if desired.
Keyboard snaps still work as before.
