QuickCAD 8 - Bug No.1 & 2..???

Although mentioned in 1 of my previous posts, I had deleted QuickCAD 8...I
have since re-installed it to find out a little more.

Two things that don't make sense:

1. .DWG's (R14) don't import as well into 8 as they do in 7....particularly
arcs....and even more particularly, blocks with attributes. I don't know
why this is. I will continue to use QC7.

2. Every now and again I get a message to insert the QC8 disk after Windows
Installer appears....it happened again tonight when (simply) opening
Internet Explorer. I don't know why this is....perhaps it has something to
do with all the web content/Point A business. I will continue to use QC7.

Right when I need 2 more copys at the shop.

What to do..... try to find some new leftover copies of 7 ? (you know I can't
buy a used one) or Ditch this whole sob story once and for all? Sheeez.

There are plenty of copies of 7 floating around at the moment. Most of the
usual supsects in the UK still have it, but for how long I dond't know.

I s'pose it's a case of better the devil ya know!

Ric, we have been tracking the issue you found where the QC8 disk is requested
when MSIE loads.

Here is a discussion of the issue and a link to a Microsft QB article that also
discusses it:

Problem:

The Windows installer for an Autodesk product starts even when I start a
non-Autodesk product

Solution:

The Windows Installer, used by Autodesk and a number of other software vendors,
features an Auto-Repair feature which automatically invokes when an application
started is in need of repair. This mechanism looks to the application installer
and the keypath or resource location last specified in the registry to provide
the missing or corrupted resource. In some cases, even with dissimilar
applications, the Windows Installer for AutoCAD may be invoked.

Microsoft has published additional information and examples of this behavior in
their technical document, avaialbnale at the following link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q235620

At present, we are not aware of any method to circumvent this feature. The only
proven method to resolve the problem is to allow the installer to complete its
repair function by providing the resources necessary (such as an installation CD
or network resources) when asked. Once the repair is completed successfully,
the problem should no longer recur.

Technical Notes:
This problem may be prevalent in any product which uses the later version of the
MSI Installer. We have seen this occur now in 3DS Max R4 and AutoCAD 2002.

Ric, Give me a little more description of the problem you are having.

What is:
1.) The operating system you are using. And patch level
2.) The number version of Internet Explorer.
3.) What other Autodesk Products are installed on your system?

Yes there are difficulties importing dwg files into AutoSketch. This
information is explained in the manual and results from the use of a filter
rather than being able to work directly with the dwg file format as the
native AutoSketch file format. Achieving full compatibility with the
Autodesk dwg file format would necessitate a file format change within
AutoSketch, meaning going away from skf or skd and employ dwg as the default
format. That was not possible given the frame of time that was allowed for
development. This would be a wish list item for version 9.

After I posted my original message, I thought I would amuse myself and put
the CD in the drive so it was ready in case it occured again.....and it did.
When opening IE, the Windows Installer would activate and attempt to update
the QuickCAD installation files. After browsing and navigating to the CD,
it does some form of install. It has done it again since then.

Rather strange that V7 is able to import .DWG's better than R8.

From your message, I see that you have a good number of Autodesk Products
installed into Windows. Lots of files dumped into the Autodesk Shared
directory (not always a good thing to have multiple copies of the same
program on the same machine).

The Microsoft MSI installer is up to version 2 and can be downloaded from
their website. You may want to get it 'cause it almost sounds as though you
have an incomplete install of 8. But, if you feel you do, then uninstall the
program > rename the shared directory. Reinstall the program with
Administrator or PowerUser priviledges after having made sure any antivirus
program is disabled and the Autodesk Shared Directory has been renamed.
Reboot as necessary.

Let me know how this goes.

With all due respects Greig, I don't have multiple copies of the same
program on the same machine.....I just have lots of AutoDesk product.

If the "Shared" directory created by AutoDesk installations is a problem,
perhaps ADesk need to re-work the concept.

Ric,

The shared directory concept is used by many software companies including
ourselves. What needs to be fixed is proper versioning of dll files that are
placed there. This is a problem common to all "shared" directories used by
software companies.

We are actively working on a solution.
