Edit Toolbar 'Lost' While Drawing Lines

When I first began using Autosketch 6.0, the Edit Toolbar would open
whenever I drew lines. I found it more convenient to go to the length
and angle boxes, especially, without having to take the extra step of
selecting the line manually. I have done something to turn off this
facility. I cannot find how to turn it back on in the manual or the
on-line help. What did I do wrong?

Thanks,

John

Right click in any margin, then switch on "Edit".

Thanks, Paul.

I found that in the Help and the Manual. It is checked. The feature
still does not work! Has anyone any further insights?

Thanks,

John

John,

This Edit bar is a major feature in AS. If you've turned it on by
r/clicking on an empty part of the ICON area - and it *still* doesn't
appear, then you've got a glitch in the program.

The other way to check is to try View>Toolbars. Make sure the Edit box
is ticked off.

If BOTH of the above don't produce the Edit bar, then you must
re-install the program.

Uninstall it through Windows
(Start>Settings>ControlPanel>AddRemovePrograms), unload everything on
the task bar and launch pad. Exit everything you can on the system tray
like virus protection, apps for net control, all that stuff that chews
up resources. Leave the Registry alone for the time being.

Once you're cleaned up, then reinstall AS.

So the insight is, if you've lost a major function within the program,
or something refuses to work like it always has, then it's probably time
to reinstall the program. Stuff happens. It's Windoze after all.

Thanks, Harvey.

I'll go try that soon. I guess it would be wise to create an independent
"backup" of my sketch files before uninstalling. I can foresee their being
uninstalled or overwritten in the process.

I'm not sure if you have the feature in version 6, but try right clicking on
a margin, select 'Toolbars', then 'Reset Interface' This should set all the
toolbars back to the default setting.

Thanks, Al.

In AS 6.0 (under Toolbars> "Change to Interface" ) you can find the options
"AutoSketch Classic" and "MS Office 97 Compatible." I tried each of these and
they took me further away from the accustomed setup than what I have now.
Perhaps Harvey is right. Perhaps something has been corrupted.

John,

You should set up a folder under the root, C:\, called "Drawings" or
similar, and folders under that for each job if you wish. This sort of
housekeeping and organization is really important. Trust me.

This root should be your default for all your work. When you uninstall
and reinstall AS, this folder will remain and you shouldn't have a
problem. AS can be set to go to that folder(s) for all drawings.

Any completed drawings should be moved to floppy or cd anyway. It's your
history. Get it away from Windows at all costs.

Side note - There is a patch to 6.01. You will need to run it after you reinstall
AS 6.0. It will bring you to 6.01.

I uninstalled and reinstalled and the program works fine now.

Below, L. Rafuse tells of a patch to Version 6 which yields Ver. 6.01.

I will download that from:

http://support.autodesk.com/enu/getDoc.asp?id=DL137104

and install it as well when time permits.

Thanks again for all the help.

Hello to all,

One step beyond Harvey's suggestion is to partition the hard drive, and
create a storage drive. It has no operating system, so if the c drive
crashes, nothing is lost. We store or files, symbol libraries,
customized palettes, and templates in this drive. We have had a windows
failure, and after reinstalling windows and AS, we were back in business.

The only event this won't help is a complete hard drive failure. It's
still best to back up and store your data elsewhere, and we do, but this
setup helps as well.
