Boy! What are you guys on about?

We've talked about ALL these issues many times since V7 was released, I
even prepared a careful response concatenating all the observed problems
and describing them in detail. We even got a response to *that* from
ADSK in the newsgoup saying they were being evaluated and thanking us
    all for our contributions.

There was never any patch offered for the biggies (like filesize
explosion, line entity moves with the arrow keys, crashes,
compatibility, etc). So I gave up with the newsgroup as a viable way to
    communicate with ADSK about problems.

Workarounds were fun to find but tedious in the end.

Unless V8 has substantial bells and whistles, V6 will do me for what I
    need.

    Can you imagine releasing a product as a V7 that isn't back-compatible
    with a V6? Save me.

Go back to 11/30/00 and look for a post titled "A Wish List For Next
AutoSketch Revision" and read through the thread.

But only if you're bored with absolutely nothing to do.

    Gidday Harvey

How does one go back that far, is there a way to do it.

I would like to get a copy of the list and I can then see what has been
    implemented !

If you had Netscape you could do a quick offline search in the newsgroup
and find it. But you really have to know what you're doing, so I don't
    advise it for you.

Anyway, here's what I wrote back then, November 11, 2000:

OK I'd like to set out some thoughts on what would be nice to see in
future revisions of AutoSketch. This doesn't include any corrections to
the current R7, rather these would be new features and, if encorporated,
would certainly bust the market for lower end CAD packages. Nothing like
blowing the competition out of the water, aftre all.

Clearly all these can't be added to AS, and some are more important than
others. I'd leave those decisions to the marketing folks who should have
their finger on the pulse somehow.

However, these thoughts are based on what I've seen currently in the
market with other packages, and *may* not add significantly to the cost
of the next revision. But it's certain if encorporated, they would add
    to the cost.

If anyone has other ideas or suggestions, please add them to the thread.
Maybe we can schnoogle AD to read this and take it seriously.

    1. Batch import for all common file types. (dwf, wmf, dxf, IGES, etc.),
    comaptible with 2.1.

    2. Back-compatibility of R7 with R6.

    3. VB and/or C++ programming interface, basic script macro language.
Better even a direct text macro like what's in Word or Excel.

    4. Tracing bitmaps automatically, similar to wintopo

    5. Batch printing.

    6. Text to follow an arc or curve. (boy, would I love *that*)

    7. Batch printing, from the program itself.

    8. Generate a material list automatically.

Please add some to the ones you most prefer to see, or add others if you
don't see them. Response is encouraged.ENDQUOTE

So there ya go. There were others, and I think you added your own
thoughts in the thread also. I'll show you those if you'd like. You even
complimented me, you foolish boy! The first and last time that's
    happened. A red-letter day.

I think there was a followup where I detailed all the thoughts from
other people, and even gave credit, although I was loathe to do that.
    Please use plain text.

    Thanks harvey

Most were in a list I am putting together and I will put in the text and
    printing stuff in right now.

Now back to updating the Manual to V8, Uch.

Here's more, from various usres, for what it's worth:

    1) Polylines that can be dots/dashes/whatever and be of any width
    without
    becoming solid.
    2) Extended text "functions". i.e. the ability to have the filename
    autoinserted into templates etc.

    3) Better print thickness control on print outs

    4) Dashed poly lines when the poly line thickness is greater than 0.

    5) version Rev14 DWG files as good as AS 6.01

    6) AutoCAD 2000 files open and save

    7) Microstation files open and save.

    8) Drafix CAD files open and save.

    9) Trim a bunch of lines to another line with a window select.

    10) One of the major bugs is with the installation of either/both QC &
    AS into a
Windows NT environment. This also includes Windows 2000 Professional.
After installation, one must swim through crock infested waters to make
manual Registry changes to set certain defaults that are automatically
    set
in Windows 95/98. This is not good.

    11) AutoDesk have a problem with the metric system....and a major
    problem is
that to transfer multi-lined text in ANYTHING other than (I think....the
    bug
has been reported previously) the default justification, one must
    convert
the QC/AS drawing to some level of imperial measurement before the text
    can
be opened successfully in LT2000, which then of course, screws around
with the scaling. If it wasn't for that, LT opens QC/AS files VERY well.

    END

Hakon Alm had a series also. I don't remember if they're covered above.
The long post I wrote in this forum can't be accessed anymore because of
a glitch that occurred in the server last year - a lot of posts were
lost and I think that big one got scuttled. Maybe someone at ADSK has
    it, god forbid.

But that's most of them, courtesy of Stephen Tall, Len and Ric. And you
and I. There were many others who echoed similar requests, but I can't
    credit them unfortunately.

    Here's a feature I've been wanting for years -

Snap to End we have, Snap to Other End, using a toggle key, I believe would
    be extremely useful.

Also, the tick box for copy or move during entity transformations - can this
be made bigger? - at the moment it is tiny when on a 19" monitor at 1280
resolution. Could Copy or Move be selected by a toggle key also.

I say Ditch the Mirror/Copy Tick Box. Just use the Control key the same way one
does to make a copy when dragging an item "off" of another.

Heck leave the box there for those who like it, just ADD the key capability

You want a copy, any copy ? Select item, select mirror (example), pick first
mirror point, press control key, pick second mirror point, release ctrl key.
    Done.

I always forget that stupid tickbox. Old habit I guess. Good thing for "UNDO".
