    autocad is slow

I've a 2008 macbook aluminium 5.1, 2.4 ghz, 4 gb ram, geforce 9400m 256 mb and a 750 gb hdd. Autocad 2012 for mac is almost unusably slow. My current issue is a 2d drawing (a very small drawing) flickers when panning on the trackpad (holding space doesn't result in this issue) and the crosshairs dissapear when zooming in/out. 3d modelling is impossible as I can't even rotate a model. I don't mind the 3d limitations to much as I only use autocad for 2d drafting. I know my system is the minimum required but this is ridiculous. I've modelled 1 sq km of hastings town centre at 1:1 in rhino and it's as smooth as silk when panning, orbiting, zooming etc. so this problem is definately an issue with autocad. Is there anything I can do to solve it, is it a settings issue?

    Thank you.

I'd also add that vectorworks and cinema 4d both work as well as rhino in both 2d and 3d (even with very large complex models). Maya seemed fine too, though I haven't used large models with it. I'd like to stick to autocad for drafting as it's industry standard.

Screenshots of the drawing in autocad and 3d model in rhino and cinema 4d.

You appeare to have the MINIMUM requirements for hardware:

MINIMUM at most computer companies is sadly a bad game they all play: it simply means you can open and casually/occasionally use their software. Often, the "recommended" options are the true minimums for production work.

If you prefer another software with less/fewer requirements, that's fine: but do resist comparing apples to oranges when it comes to software (or hardware, or anything else really). It's best to compare the same exact software on different platforms to gauge performance shortcommings. Know anyone running better hardware?

There's a girl in my studio with a 13" macbook pro who uses autocad 2012 for windows instead because the mac version is to slow. I'll ask if anyones running it on better hardware (I still think it's absurd that my computer can't run it though.)

    A month ago i bought a 15" macbook quadcore i7 processor.

First autocad worked ok but now i wanted to rotate a drawing and it just crashes..

I really dont want windows on my macbook so does anyone know what autocad for mac works faster than 2012?

    Good luck all ://

None i'm afraid. The problem seems to be that autoCAD for mac lacks software acceleration/rendering for the graphics drivers. I've heard of people with i7 imacs who can't run it smoothly.

Ok update: things are improving! I've just installed 2013 and the trackpad/mouse flickering has all but dissapeared (so far) there are still graphical issues but a vast improvement.

It is still far from perfect though - I get screen tearing when swiping between desktops in full screen mode, and 3d functionality is still severely crippled (ie i'm working on a medium size 2d drawing at the moment and I can't even rotate that smoothly.) I hope subsequent releases sort these issues out. Despite being told I shouldn't compare this with other software, I feel realistically it should be comparable to competing products otherwise Autodesk will just loose customers.
