Re: AutoCAD for MAC 2013 running slow

After a few more days of use, the problem seems to be with entity creation and deletion.  All of the entity creation commands, such as line, circle, polygon, hatch etc. have a lag time after the specific object is created - like it is writing the new entity to the database.  The lag for me is around 1 to 2 seconds.  On the line command, the lag happens after each and every segment is created.  Most of the entity modifier commands work without the lag, although I have noticed a lag sometimes on the trim command.  The erase command has a lag after selection and hitting enter to delete the selected items - again like it is pausing to update the database.   The lag does seem to get worse the longer the program is open, like the memory leak problems in the original r2011 version.  Another key point is that the lag does not appear to happen, or happens with a much, much smaller delay, on files with few or no objects.  The more compicated the drawing file, the more predominant the delay becomes.  The other thing is that my delays are all happening on files that I created in the previous version.  Since I just got the program, I have not created a drawing from scratch.  I'll try that today and see what happens.  The new version of the program is essentially unusable for serious production with these lag time issues.

There is definitely a speed difference working on a new drawing in 2013, versus opening a large drawing created on a previous version (2012).  The lagging is not noticeable on a new drawing - it's still pretty small with no text, though.

For what it's worth.  Running AutoCAD LT 2013 for Mac on a MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB RAM (I know its not officially supported), no graphics switching - AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB graphics and a 256 GB SSD with TRIM support enabled.  Very slow with many spinning beachballs.  Happens whether I open a 4GB file or a 250 MB file.

Hi John and others

Yes, we are having very similar problems.  We have upgraded from four old PC's running Autocad LT2007 to four new iMac 27" core i5 2.7GB with 1TB HD and 8 GB RAM running Autocad LT2013.  Installation by the local Mac/Autocad specialist.

Very many commands were just "hanging" there, with the spinning disk remaining there for a long time.  The Activity Monitor said that there was virtually no free space on the hard drive when Auotcad was open.

In an attempt to solve the problem, we upgraded to 16GB RAM.  It's better, but still nowhere near as good as 2007LT on the old PC's.  This problem is the same on any sized drawing, and it does not matter whether the drawing is on the iMac or the server.  Most commands still "hang" but not too many spinning disks now.

We  were wondering about changing to 2012.

Any thoughts anyone?

Regards

Peter

I had the same issues and went back to acad 2012 for mac from the app store. I found it works pretty well. Another less expensive alternative put parallels on th emacs and continue with pc based system. I still use the PC based autocad 2011 LT and 2013 LT. Both programs work well with minimal issues. I'm still struggling with 2013 and have now tried it out on a brand spanking new iMac 3.4GHz Core i7 with 20GB of RAM and a 2GB AMD radeon HD 6970M graphics card.

It is still the same and I still get the annoying delays between commends. I've also had some hardware crashes while working in AutoCAD so I'm thinking that maybe AutoCAD is causing the graphics card to fail in some way and causing the crashes??

I've logged the problem with Autodesk help desk but all I have so far is a lame responce asking me to delete cache files, installing tools to cool the CPU, etc.

They did however ask for a sceenshot movie, but I'm not sure how to provide this from a mac without installing paid software. Does anyone have any ideas?

ScreenFlow has a demo version.  I think it puts a watermark on the movie.

I have not had any speed problems when I create a new drawing in 2013.  I continue to have lag problems when working on drawings created in 2012.  I'm pretty sure it is a memory leak, because it gets worse the longer I have the program open.

Hi JohnRennie,

You can use "QuickTime Player.app", just select File->New Screen Recording and follow instructions. I use it as absolutely free screen capture application. After it creates .MOV file I use "MPEG Streamclip.app" to convert screen capture to .MP4 format (the file size gets smaller).

BTW, I observe this topic for a long time, and for me it would also be interesting to see these delays between commands, that you are experiencing. Personally I have never seen such delays in this version of AutoCAD. Another matter - delays when switching between open files, which begin to appear after 2-3 hours of work - yes I have such problem. And I can agree with john, that this is the result of "memory leaks".
