Grating using Plate command

Is there a way I can trim back the plate (grating) to contour steel members. Is the plate command smart enough to detect steel, pipe and be able to contour around the objects? For example a Petro-Chemical platform

Hello
Use command "fit to object" (fourth icon in "Machining I" toolbar).
In the dialog box you'll be able to set different variants of gap size and shape.
