Raster vs. Vector file

Can anyone tell me the difference between Raster/vector file? I have a hard time making that connection.

Basically, a Raster file looks like an image file (they contain grid/cell information, i.e. pixels).  A Vector file will contain data on points, lines, polylines, polygons, circles, etc; data with defined points/pathways.
