Raster Design Capabilities

Can raster design help standard autocad deal with multiple, large tiff files (aerial photos and satellite images)?

Our systems regularly crash when working with dwgs which have multiple tiff files loaded for a background (or even one in some cases).

In one case we have roughly 50 images, each over 100mb.  Another case we have 6 images, each over 500mb.

Standard autocad takes up to 45 minutes to load dwg's with this amount of tiff files attached, if it will load at all.

Even trying to load 1 - 500mb image into a drawing can take 10-15 minutes before autocad becomes responsive.  (Advice to users:  Save often b/c autocad is not happy with this and will, more than likely, crash at some point.)

Most of our system have >3gb RAM and 256g GPUs.  Some GPUs are 750g.  The 64 bit machines don't have as big a problem even with 256g GPUs.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

There is a thread going on in the other sections Map3D or C3D regarding using SID Images - you might try out a SID, which is a pyramid image that has multiple compressed layers of resolution in one file for display.  You can get a good compression ratio to speed up performance.  Lizardtech owns the SID format - check their site out for more information, such as GeoViewer - a tool for working with SID's.
