We have both Win NT and Win 95 workstations which are working on a Novell
Netware 4.1 network, which means
that all drawings are saved at a common location on the network,so all
people can get it from the network
Two of the computers (Win NT and Servicepack 4) have this strange
problem.......:
After you have opened a file and what to open a new one ( autocad ask to
save the old one (say Yes og No - doesn´t matter) )
it writes that the new opened file is in read only mode or is in use of a
anothe user. The strange thing is that sometimes you can open
a file up to 5 times before it come with the meassage. Anyhow when you try
do open the same drawing to times (without rebooting) it also
come with the meassage. After this meassage (read only mode or is in use of
a anothe user) you have to save on local drive (C:\) or have to
reboot and open a file (2-5 times) before it starts again with the same
meassage.
The User have Administrator rights on NT workstation and have all the rights
(except Access and Supervisor) rights on
Novell Netware. By the way I don´t mean this could be a problem about the
rights because sometimes you can open files without
the meassage.
Please help
Best regards

Hi Peter,
You may want to check the settings for XLOADCTL, especially if you are using
references the files as xrefs. Here is the information from the help file:
Type: Integer
Saved in: Registry
Initial value: 1
Turns xref demand loading on and off and controls whether it opens the
original drawing or a copy.
0 Turns off demand loading; entire drawing is loaded
1 Turns on demand loading, reference file is kept open
2 Turns on demand loading; a copy of the reference file is opened
When XLOADCTL is set to 2, the reference file copy is stored in the AutoCAD
temporary files directory (defined by PREFERENCES) or in a user-specified
directory.
You can also access this setting in PREFERENCES, in the Performance Tab
where it says "External reference file demand load:". Set it to disabled
and see if that works. This sets XLOADCTL to 0. You may want to make sure
all of your stations are set the same way.
I hope this helps your situation. Let me know if it works.

I'm not so sure that's the way to go... if XLOADCTL is set to 0 then demand
loading is turned off. I don't know why you'd want to do that.
from AutoCAD User's Guide:
Through a combination of demand loading and saving drawings with indexes, you
can increase the performance of drawings with external references. Demand
loading works in conjunction with the XLOADCTL and INDEXCTL system variables.
When you turn on demand loading, if indexes have been saved in the referenced
drawings, AutoCAD loads into memory only the data from the reference drawing
that is necessary to regenerate the current drawing. In other words, referenced
material is read in "on demand."... more in HELP
As long as XLOADCTL isn't set to 1 there shouldn't be a problem with READ-ONLY
as it applies to xrefs.

So then xloadctl = 2 would eliminate the read only problems while the only
sacrifice is creation of an automatic temporary copy of the file (no big deal)...
if I understand it.

Yes... as does setting it to 0 (with no copy being made). However you don't gain the
benefits of demand loading. As a general rule... set INDEXCTL to 3 in all your
drawings (it increases the size but only slightly) and set XLOADCTL to 2 (it's a
system variable so you only need set it once).
oh... and use xclipping when ever possible to make things even faster...

Hey again
The first thing i did was to remove the Netware Client (ver 4.11) for NT and
instead install a newer one (4.60 incl. Zenworks)
and this helped me. There has not been problems anymore, so the solution -
in my case - must have been this upgrade.
But anyhow, I´ve printet out all these answars you have been giving me, so
if there will come simular problems I might
have a solution. Tanks for the help
Best regards
