What exactly are you trying to accomplish by opening in vanilla AutoCAD? Why not open in Plant 3D if you need to get at the properties?

I'm going to take a shot in the dark her and say that you are probably send these drawings to to a customer that doesn't have Plant 3D. Is this correct?

If so, you may want to investigate creating DWFx files. The Plant 3D properties are viewable in a DWFx file.
