Multi-Project Standards

I'm really hoping someone can help me.  We recently (within the last couple weeks) moved from MEP to Plant Suite.  We are in the process of starting fresh, and litterally recreating everything from the ground up to take advantage of the unique fetures of P3D.  The way that we currently have things set up is we have a project that encompasses the entire site, with all PIDs, Models, and other such information.  We then have seperate projects for ongoing and proposed upgrades that we are underway with or in various stages of planning.

Here is what I am wondering.  Since we are starting everything from the ground up, and have one overall site project as well as various upgrade projects that will be incorporated into the main project when approved, is there a way that multiple projects can access the same stadards?  We are finding that we are having to add many specialized PID symbols and would like to have them availble to all projects and upgrades.  Is there a way that we can keep the symbols and styles in a common location that can be accessed, changed and added to by all that need access to the projects?

When you create a project, you get the option of using another project as your template, so I would propose you do something similar.

Create a project, set up the proper symbology etc from the start. Once that's done, use that project as your template for future projects.

Outside of this, there are some path's in the project setup that you can point to folders/servers for files, eg, templates, specs, and a handful of others.

I understand using an existing project as a template for future projects.  That is not what we are looking to do.  We are hoping that we can have one file/server/location that holds the standards and files for more than one project.  That way if we add a part or symbol in the main plant project, it would be available in the projects we set up for expansion, and vice-versa.

I'm interested to know the suggestion for this.

So far the only thing I've seen that does this is AcPlant's PlantSync product:

Hi,

There is no simple way to do this using standard functionality.

It may be possible to batch copy any files that that you customise from one project to another using one of the various free file sync tools available online, however this is not something that would be supported by Autodesk.

I will log a wish list with our development team to improve the way cusomisation to multiple projects are handled.

The utility from ACPlant mentioned in the last post looks like it could suit your requirements.

Thanks,

Dan

We have basically the same situation. Multiple facilities (Each would be its own Master Facility), with multiple departments, with multiple projects. How would you handle the "Family Tree" as described in the original post? I'd like to control the Attributed data (Title Block Info) from the project level. At the same time, be able to see all the projects in one, overall model. How is everybody handling that type of situation?

Thanks.
