Re: Off Page Connectors

Jason,

I tried out your solution to the OPC equipment, but I had two questions about the results:

1> The to/from equipment tag shows up in the OPC, though if the destination equipment is changed I cannot get the feild to update.  If i try to manually overide the feild in the properties tab, then it will ignore the inputed text and update correctly.  Is there anyway other way to update this feild?

2>Is there a way to use Visibility states in the OPC block?  I tried adding two states to the block each with the opposite feild suppressed, but it seems visibility states are stripped out when it is inserted as a P&ID object.  Is there anyway to create the states, similar to how Normally Open/Normally closed changes operate?

Re: Off Page Connectors

The off-page connectors belong to a special object type (ACPPDYNAMICOFFPAGE) in order to allow the features that off-page connectors provide, so dynamic block functions are stripped out from editing.

The symbol list wouldn't work for off-page connectors. The open/closed states on the right-click menu are only available on valves.

It sounds like this is mainly an issue with the acquisition rules not updating automatically. So on your first question, if the equipment tags on the off-page connectors automatically updated that would that solve the problem, correct?

Jason,

Is there a consolidation of issues and work arounds for working with P&ID 2012?

Hi Ray,

The development team is currently checking in the acquisition rule updates. I currently do not have a timeframe on when this might be implemented.

tgwestbrook,

On the question about the to/from tags not updating. If you close and open the drawing do the tag numbers update? Also if you use SYNCHSTYLES command do they update?

The OPC annotations for equipment tags are working fine on my test project. I have SYCHSTYLESMODE variable set to "1" which refreshes the "styles" for the annotations each time the drawing is closed and opened. Then I use SYNCHSTYLES to manually refresh the values if someone else has changed a tag number on another drawing.

Ray,

I have submitted these questions to the development team so they can look into improvements to the off-page connectors on future releases.

Thank you,

Re: Off Page Connectors

01-19-2012 11:04 AM in reply to: jason.drew

All,

I think I need the "Off Page Connectors For Dummies" edition! I am a reluctant user of P&ID 2012 and am the first to admit that I don't know all (or even many) of the ins and outs. Per Jason's recommendation, I went to create new "source" and "destination" arrows. I looked at http://docs.autodesk.com/PNID/2012/ENU/filesPUG/GUID-D4BE3805-2567-4872-83C2-C3A3A918231-42.htm to help get me started.

Hang-up #1: I'm not sure which drawing to point to and which available block to use to get the right OPC to start with. (between steps 8 and 9 in above document) Ended up selecting OffpageTemplates.dwg and the PIP Off-plot connector. Not sure if I chose right.

After getting over Hang-up #1, I clicked Edit Block because I wanted to do as Jason said and change "the data source for the lower annotation". Here I encountered:

Hang-up #2: Where you show #Annotation etc type tags, I have nothing. See my attachment. So, do I need to add these? If so, how, and do I need to name them anything specific? (remember, I need the "dummies" edition)

Hang-up #3: I can't seem to find where your snazzy #(.) button in the top left corner comes from. I've looked all through the ribbon and no luck. Am I blind? Where can I get that button? Or is there another way to get that window open?

If you could help me with these issues, I would greatly appreciate it. Or you could point me to a good instruction set or tutorial... or just give me the block that you made (would that work?).

Thanks!!!

Just stumbled across this and I wrote an article with a pretty good solution to automating the OPC's earlier this year. Check it out here: http://www.hagerman.com/newsletter/articles/104/autocad-p-id-off-page-connector-automation
