Errors in mechanical files

Is there anyway to keep the couple of good commands within Mechanical (layer groups, layer commands) and turn off all of the other error producing stuff? I've abandonded structue, however I still use Xrefs to build draiwngs. Xref's within mechanical routinely are corrupted and will crash AutoCAD. I can open the files up within core AutoCAD without problem, but fire up Mechanical and boom. Really frustrating.

May I request more information regarding the issue of xref in AutoCAD Mechancial?

Do you have steps to reproduce from scratch or a sample drawing to be investigated?

Which version of AutoCAD Mechanical are you using? Have you tried with any available latest service pack update?

I have all of the service packs for V12 Mech. This is a re-occuring issue with Mechanical since 2006 that's never been resolved. Somehow when Mech is reading/auditing mechanical data within Xref's (even for files where structure isn't enabled) it runs into issues. Can I replicate this? I wish I could. i seems mostly to happen when ANY file is reference-edited within another file. Even simple files. At the heart of it, mechanical seems to limit the overall functionality of core AutoCAD and build in quirky behaviours that lead to drawing errors and shut-downs. 99% of the times that I get corrupted files within Mechanical i'll be able to simpl open the file within core AutoCAD (sans Mechanical being loaded) and the file runs fine. When I audit the file within AutoCAD I get "0" errors. 

Seems like AutoDesk, since the 2004/2006 release periods has been more interested in releasing new versions of software, than in releasing patches to fix versions. Just an observation of what is a frustrating trend from my perspective.

I think this may happen when you try to xref a metric drawing into a inch drawing. vice versa. If you use the same unit during xref, it should be alright. I have logged this issue in our issue tracking system and notify development team.

Thanks for your response. Actually the references that we use are in varying units. We mfr and design with groups from europe and asia so we're constantly receiving, reviewing and referencing files with different units.
