can anyone tell me how to change the steel shape color? If i put the part (steel shape) to a new layer that has a color defined as yellow for example, the part remains on my screen as white. The properties confirm that is is on a new layer, (set color to yellow, bylayer) but is does not show the color change. I am sure i am missing somthing simple here. Any help would be appreciated.
When you insert a steel shape from the content center, it will show as a "content library item". This is essentially a block reference. When you insert the steel shape, layers associated with the specific shape will also appear (see attached image). To change the color of a steel shape, you will want to change the color of the specific layer that the block reference is on. For instance using a HP 10x42 steel shape, you will want to change the color of the layer AM_0N.

I am trying to move the shape or reassign it to a new layer as in "steel shapes" for this example. once i move it to the new layer, the object properties show it on the steel shape layer (color yellow) but the steel shape remains white. It does not update to the color designated by the layer. see attached....
Steve,
I have been doing some reading and work on this type of issue. In the "Object Property Settings", you are supposedly able to reassign layers for Mechanical objects. I have tried setting the basic contour lines to layer 0 (see attachment), hoping I can then insert the block on any layer, but that hasn't been working. Is there something that I am doing wrong?
Also, could you take a look at a related post:
Thanks,

All,
I believe I have worked out a solution to the troubles of having Standard AutoCAD Mechanical parts all on the same color layers. If you utilize layer groups, you can actually place steel shapes, fasteners, etc. on different layers, but maintain the Mechanical functionality. Use the AMLAYERGROUP command and attached is a blog post that I developed that lay out the basic steps.
