Automatic save

Maybe I am stupid but what is the point of Automatic save if I can do nothing with the file it creates. I find the .ac$ files but there is nothing I can do with them.

Sorry about how that question came out. I had just lost a bunch of work and was ... not happy. I changed the option from AC$ to DWG. Now it saves them as SV$. I can change those to DWG's and save what I was doing. I would like to know what AC$ are good for if AutoCAD cannot open them.
