Managing Aerial Imagery - Raster Ugh!

I am experiencing unhandled access general errors as i work with a drawing
file intowhich i have inserted about a third of the counties aerial photos,
when its working the mosaic is quite a usfull tool. Should/could i be more
efficient with my memory by xrefing the MR Sid images?

    thank yall in advance

I don't think you would gain anything by Xrefing. However, I would recommend
that you turn off image display for all images by default. This way you
would not have huge load times and you can turn on only those images that
you need for the area you are working on.

You can toggle image display off and on via the properties dialogue.

    Jim,

Go to Map>Image>Options>Memory and increase the memory to allocate to
images. You probably don't want to make it more than 1/2 of your total
    physical memory.

One operation that you may consider is to mosaic all of the images with an
application such as ER Mapper or ERDAS Imagine and then compress the
finished mosaic using either ECW or MrSID. With ER Mapper and Imagine you
can also color balance the images, which will make the mosaic look like a
    single photograph.

The ECW or MrSID files will work just fine once you configure your computer
for large raster data until you try printing the entire dataset. Both
compression algorithms will expand the image to full Tiff size for printing.
You will need a RIP engine to deal with that issue. ER Mapper includes a
RIP engine but I am not sure how well it works with Map, or by itself for
that matter. But you can have the ERM folks send you a CD with ER Mapper
for evaluation. ERDAS (now part of Leica) may do the same with Imagine
evals. The point is that there are two parts to the issue of raster data
in a GIS: 1) viewing large amounts of raster data, and 2) printing the data.
You may only be interested in viewing the data now but eventually you'll
want that large wall map showing your work. Make sure that the solution you
    select serves both purposes.

If you don't want to deal with an image processing program then consider
outsourcing the creation of a color balanced, compressed mosaic of your area
of interest. A remote sensing grad student at a university or college
should also be able to do this for you.
