Ok, so in map3d I can use
attach data source
connect data source
define link templates
generate data links
(in that order) to attach data in an excel spreadsheet to a bunch of text objects in my drawing. The spreadsheet is keyed on the text in the text objects.
However - I can't then make a thematic map based on this data! Using the thematic map tool, with either "data" or "sql" expression, acad reports that "No link templates exist". Which seems odd because I already linked the data in using one.
Can anyone solve this problem for me?

Which ODBC driver did you use to link your DWG objects to the Excel records?

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (well this is what it says in properties for the attached data source anyway)
