Getting started as a student

I need to buy a student version of AutoCAD for my electrical/electronics
engineering course. As a keen hiker, I was thinking of getting the map
version.

My university book shop staff cannot tell me if I am able to do both types
of work with Autodesk Map or if I need 2 products.

Can anyone out there help?

Thanks, David

AutoDesk Map is built on AutoCAD, so anything you can do in AutoCAD you will
be able to do in Map. However don't expect too much out of map unless you
have ways to obtain the maps,GPS software, etc you plan on using for your
hiking hobby. IOW don't expect Map to have everything you need right out of
the box, you need to "build" the maps first. and unless you are a part time
student that has lots of time and money I suggest just getting the basic
AutoCAD.

I agree with Murph to an extent. However in canada, tonnes of free and very
cheap geo-corrected topo maps and drawings are available for use in ACADMAP.
Check out with your local/territorial/state/federal goverment agencies to see
what is available as well as your local map dealer. You may be supprised what
you can get.

I agree there is a lot of free stuff out there, not quite as much after 9-11
but still there if you know where to look. My point is we all know how long
it took us (me anyways) to learn all the map tools, command etc. to make a
useful map. I won't recommend it to anyone as a hobby unless they know it
takes time to learn then ins and outs, when they may be able to use the
basic AutoCAD to open the free stuff out there and use the autocads commands
(line, pline dbconnect and so on)to map out some hiking trails. MHO
