One of the first things I do after a fresh install is shut off automatic saves. Type 'options' in the command line and it will be under the 'Open and Save' tab. Ctrl+'s' is your friend and use it often. The crashes seem to occur while the program is thinking and saving at the same time. If autocad is crunching, it's best to leave it alone.
