How do I attach a detail drawing to an existing drawing?
Is there a way to link a drawing with an object in the existing drawing?

One option would be to use Define Document View
(_ADEDEFDOCVIEW).  This feature allows users to link documents to objects
and view them by selecting the object.  In this case you would be firing up
a new session of Map to view the detail drawing.

You may also want to consider a format other than dwg for the detail -
perhaps plotting the detail drawing to a raster file, dwf, pdf, or wmf.
This will save a lot of system resource and be a lot faster.

Try using the hyperlink.
