Why can't I get styled layers from a dwg to appear on screen?

I am stuck. I am trying to learn Map 2007 and have been to AU this year and been through the tutorial that came with the program.
I have attached a basic drawing with 3 layers. I have queried in the drawing selecting layers. I see the 3 layers in the Display Manager and style them. I can't get any of these styles to show up on screen by checking the boxes at all. I only see the original 3 layers on the screen. I went to the class The Magic of Display Maps in AutoCAD Map 3D and I have followed these instructions too and can't get it to work the way he showed it.
What have I done wrong?

Did you try redraw, regen or update. Just a thought.

Try to uncheck the default base map layer.
