Splitting Layers

I imported SHP files from the Michigan.gov/CGI website which included land cover information for a county. In just one imported layer I have wooded wetlands, shrubs, water mass, lowland hardwood, Aquatic Bed Wetland, and Emergent Wetland. Can I split this layer and create new layers for each of these groups of information? I have filtered the information I want to seperate, but I'm having difficulty creating the new layers. Where do i need to look?

The easy way is to create the new layers when you import the shp file.
Instead of taking the default layer name (of the shp file's name) click on
the ellipsis icon (3 dots) under the Drawing Layer column and select "Use
data field for layer name" in the Layer Mapping dialog.
If you can not start over with the import you will need to do an Alter
property query on the dwg file.
