Red X's after creating topology.

I have noticed that after some topologies are successfully created there may
be some markers showing similar to what you get during a failed "drawing
cleanup" process. Can anyone tell me what they indicate when the topology
was created successfully? Thanks

I'm curious about this, too !!

Hi Lynn,

Just "Redraw" you screen and all will be fine.
(These are left-overs from the clean-up process you have just completed).

Arad, thanks for the reply.
I agree that redraw makes them go away but I believe they are new and
specific to the topology that was created since they appear even when the
redraw was performed prior to creating the topology . I am suspicious that
these may become problem areas if another overlay where to be attempted.
Sometimes I get a "intersections detected" message when trying to make a
consecutive topology overlay on the newly created one. At that point you get
more red X's even though the parent topologies are "complete and correct".
I've gotten the problem overlays to work by doing cleanup on the parent
topologies using a higher tolerance but that can be very time consuming.

Lyn,

I completely agree with you.
A topology is a sensitive thing and even if it was created successfully
there might be objects or locations that could cause problems later on.
For instance when having almost duplicate lines or very small polygons
which were created by mistake due to not proper digitizing or due to
other reasons.
Before creating a topology the objects should be very carefully cleaned
to make sure that no issues will come up later on. The 'red crosses'
make you already aware of that...

Marion hi,

Do you mean to say that even after having completed a topology (I am
refering only to Polygonal Topologies, for the sake of this discussion) it
might still be incomplete or incorrect in some way?

I was under the impression that the software was doing a very good job of
checking all the geometry to prevent exactly these problems (That's why we
had to "clean" it so many times).

I would be very grateful if you could elaborate on the subject. It is very
important to know if the data we are "manufacturing" is as good as I think
it is.

COuld someone that understands this problem please explain these red x's that appear after an error free topology is created?

I have the same thing happening on a 2500 polygon topology.
I need to know that the topology is good.

Thanks.

I can't explain it, but I can tell you that you are not the only one having
this problem. We have created many error free polygonal topgolgies only to have
the geometry audited and get those wonderful red Xs all over the drawing again.

The only solution we came up with is to create your inital topolgy, unload
it, load it with audit geometry box checked(this will usually produce a number
of Red Xs) these Xs are in fact gaps that were created somehow during the
topology creation process (IF SOMEONE FROM AUTODESK WOULD RESPOND TO MY 2
PREVIOUS POSTS, I WOULD APPRECIATE IT!). you must then clean all these gaps up
just like you did before creating your initial successful topology. Then unload
and load the Topology until the message appears that sayt topology is correct
and complete NOT (incorrect and complete) These gaps are usually around 0.00001
or smaller! this is crazy!.

You are not the only one experiencing this.

Is there someone else who knows why this happens? or better yet
why?

Lynn,
I'm recently have the same problem with a hughe map of my country. I saw other GIS software in my experience before and AutoCAD Map have low clarity to show the different errors and their location in topologies, ie the red crosses, red lines or red crosses in each line link in a polygon topology. When you have a huge map with complex polygons and islands it´s very hard to know where is the error. I'm trying to put in order this map for 4 days and after I decide to migrate the data to TNTmips (lended for a friend) and I complete the job in one night!. I'm not saying all is bad but in other GIS software you an see topology errors permanently (with different symbols and colors for dangling nodes and correct nodes, for example).
This is very difficult for me to see. I think Autodesk should be something for this. A solution after this experience is to create some blocks with peculiar shapes and colors in order to see wich are dangling nodes when you are defining the topology for example. Whwen you don´t have error messages after the topology creation it are sucessfully created. Be carefull and create a backup file before topology generation.

These red crosses are sliver polygons (or potential slivers, because there is no true criteria). No errors, but some polygons have large perimeters and small areas. Could be real problems, coming from cleanup.
