Quick Select issue

Hi users and Autodesk,

Is there a VERY bad bug in AutoCAD 2002/Map5/LDD3/Map6?
Or is it me?

When using Quick Select the software lets you choose AND edit objects in
Frozen layers!!!

You can even Erase all objects in your file without knowing it!

I always thought that Freezing a layer was like locking it. I guess I was
wrong (Or something els is very wrong).

Anybody else seen this?

Frozen layers are primarily for visibility display list processing.

Locked layers are for restricting data manipulation.

Here is a quick overview:

On/Off - controls display of layers based on current display list.
Freeze/Thaw - controls display of layers when display list is generated
(regenerating drawing)
Lock/Unlock - controls editing of existing objects on given layer (does not
limit creation of new objects)

Normally when you select objects manually there is no way to select anything
on a frozen layer because you cannot see it. I am guessing that Qselect
"sees" the whole drawing and therefore objects on frozen layers. If you
don't want objects selected/deleted through qselect, see what happens if you
lock the layer they reference.

Thanks

I knew all of what you said.
But all commands that I was aware of DID NOT manipulate objects on Frozen
layers (Including Erase, All, etc'), so there was a certain logic to the way
freezing layers affected the state of the objects in a drawing. Now this
changes everything.

This is very strange.

Actually, I have found this 'feature' very useful. I have used it many
times, especially when working with badly planned paper space layouts. Now,
to move everything out of the way of a new title block, and back, I just
Quick Select-multiple-select all. This way, I'm sure all drawings are
oriented correctly in their respective layouts, and I don't have to worry
about artifacts from frozen layers being out of place.

Personally, I hope this 'feature' does not get fixed- I've saved countless
hours not having to thaw and refreeze layers to fix legacy drawings-
especially important when you have 100+ layers in a file worked on by
multiple people.

It's always better to have many ways of doing different things, rather than
many ways to do one. You can already move everything visible by selecting
it, and move everything visible and 'OFF' when invoking a command by
selecting "all."
