Problems with Import/Export of MapInfo files (MIF/MID)

The import of the MapInfo MIF files does not function in Autodesk MAP 5. The same stuff, same MIF file is normally imported in MAP 4 (this old user interface). In MAP 5 even does not function import of the simple MIF file which is previously created with export from MAP 5.

Does anybody know what is the problem

I answer to myself and for some others who are
maybe interested. After few hours of testing I found the reason why the stuff
doesn't function. Generally problem is caused by file MID. There are basically
two bugs or missing functionality in the import program in MAP 5.

1. Every MIF file in one subdirectory has to have
its own pair MID file. If you have let's say three MIF files and only two MID
files, the import for any of the MIF file doesn't function. Could be possible
connected with alphabetical order. First file in my list does not have MID file,
and the second and the third MIF files cannot be imported. The biggest problem
is that program does not say anything except "0 objects are inserted...", so it
is hard to understand what is happening. MAP 4 immediately says that MID file is
missing, and breaks the procedure.

2. In MIF files after header definition (extents,
character set, data structure...) follows the part with spatial entities, for
example points. Every points is defined with two rows, coordinates and some
symbol data. If there is no any additional atribute data, MID file could be
empty (has to existe anyway). In MAP 4 this is enough that this MIF can be
imported. In MAP 5 you have to have empty rows (?!) equally to number of points
defined in MIF file.

Hello All,

The workaround to the problem is to use the older
import/export commands.  Just type mapimport4 or mapexport4 on the command
line to initialize the older translator.
