Somewhat, if you both have AutoCAD Map.

Yes both users are running Autocad Map 5, I was told that you can only have multiple user's editing a document if it contains layer's, can you tell me how to enable multiple users access to drawings without layers please...

I have never seen a drawing w/o layers (I am in AEC). Obviosly, Joe could work on layer A, Sam on layer B. If you must have multiple users on one layer, you could carefully copy away segments of the drawing to new files, then reassemble into another new file after each has worked on his segment (treacherous to control). Hi,

Autodesk Map allows many users on different
machines to  attach, Query and edit drawing objects from the same file at
the same time (Objects are locked on a first-come-first-lock
system).

This does not have to do with layers. Even objects
on the same layer can be edited by different users (I hope you use layers
extensibly).

The way Map works makes Xrefs redundant (but you
can still use them).

can you tell me how to enable this function, I get one prson to open a document and then when the next user goes in the get a read-ony document, I have logged in as SuperUser and tried to access the same documents that are open but with no luck

Well,

The whole idea when working with multiple files
with Map is that no-one "OPENS" a dwg file.

All work is done by attaching, quering, editing and
saving back the needed objects.

Even with Map, when a file is opened, it is
automatically locked (By the operating system, by the way).

Arad, what I need to know is weather it is possible to have multiple users accessing the same drawing at the same time, not a user accessing multiple files..

Yes, of course.

Many users can attach and edit any number of
different drawing files at the same time. Map locks the different OBJECTS in the
files, and not the files them
selfs.

The only thing that should not happen is that
different users try to edit the same objects. The software will not let this
happen because there will be locks on any object that is being
edited.

maybe because I don't know where I am suppose to be Arad, my problem though is that I have 2 people who want to edit the same drawing at the same time, the first person gets in okay but when the second person tries to open the same drawing they get an error message saying that they can get the read only version of the drawing, they get the same error even if they try and do a partial open, where did I go wrong?

Well...

I guess what you need is basic training of Autodesk
Map.

As I have written before, you DO NOT open the files
(No one!!!). You attach them to your session, query and edit.

It would be impossible to elaborate any more
here.

You really need to do the Map tutorials, etc. to
see how to do this.

Like was said earlier, you need to "attach" the
drawing, not "open" it. This is under the Map pulldown menu. Once you're
"attached" a drawing, you then need to run a "query" to bring the objects you
want to work on into your drawing. After working, you can then save the
modified/new objects back to the original; "attached" drawing. Other users can
have the drawing "attached" at the same time - they just can't edit the same
"object" at the same time someone else has them queried for
editing.
