Mapimport Error - "Can't open object for read"

Hi All,

I have recently run into a problem when importing objects into Map (_mapimport command).  My system info is: Map3D 2010 32 bit with service packs 1 and 2 on Windows XP 32 bit with service pack 3.  PC has 4 GB RAM and dual core 2.79 GHz processor.

What I am needing to do is import some data from shapefiles for use in a drawing.  However, I only need a limited portion of the files, so I am using the "define window" in the import options to specify the location in the map.  However, when I click on OK to run the import, I get a few objects imported then get the error "can't open object for read" (see the screen shot).

I have tried a few things to trouble shoot:

Opened same shape file in ArcMap - no problems

Import entire shapefile into Map3D without any data - no problems

Import entire shapefile into Map3D with data - no problems

Connect to shapefile via FDO - no problems

Import entire shapefile into a different drawing, then query into original drawing in the limited area - no problems

I only encounter this error if I use the mapimport and try to limit the area of the import; either by defining the area or by using the "use display" filter.  This error also occurs on only a few shapefiles, but not all of them.  I have also tried using recover and audit on the DWG, but they both come up clean.  If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate it.

Hi @macpheri,

I run just a short tests with version 2017/2018 and it is working in my environment, so might be damaged SHP (SHX, DBF....) file.

I assume loading the file completely work as expected.

Can you please try:

Copy all related files for this SHP to new folder and try again.

Delete  or rename IDX file and try again

You might send the files so we can check the behavior.

Kind regards

Brigitte
