Map for mapping?

I'm looking at Map (actually LDD) for my site design and mapping needs -
is anyone out there actually producing presentation maps with this?
There seems to be a million software solutions that do some part of this
process, but when all is added up, they sum about the same $ as Map. Any
thoughts? Am I wasting $ on something that is overkill or even
inadequate?

Thanks

What do u mean with presentation maps?
Technical maps....
Internet maps....
With Map you can plan a GIS work from A to Z (you can't do the same thing
with Arcview basic...).
Then you can publish yor maps on the web using dwf file (for free) or,
better, with Autodesk Mapguide (much more expensive but very professional).
BUT, with Map you can't use 16 millions colours.(may be in ver.5).....but
you can use alternative graphic softwares...
Hope to help you..
Paolo

I mean the final paper product map - something you can present at a
hearing or to a design group. I'm not so much looking for GIS
capabilities, just a way to assemble pre-existing GIS data into a high
quality map print. It would be nice to integrate the data into my CAD
site design, but what I need to know is how well MAP does in the paper
map area.

Is it better to assemble my site design and gis data in MAP (or LDD) and
make my map prints from that -or- Would I be better off bringing my
CAD site design into Arcview (or something similar) to make my final
maps?

Thanks

Hi Paolo,

I would not recommend creating your data and moving it to ArcView; that software works completely differently from map and would require a huge learning curve. Plus you would be buying more software just for plotting capabilities which are available in Map/AutoCAD.

Map does pretty well in the paper map area; a lot of companies just use Map/AutoCAD for their prints. You can now plot in TrueColor. There are also a lot of applications that work with Map/AutoCAD to produce very high quality output.

Have a look at the online Help for the PLOT command, and you'll see what the capabilities are.

Cheers,
David

John,

Have a look at http://e-learning.autodesk.com/adnpartners/store/default.asp for Autodesk partner products. Look at the Tool Store and Plotting Products for a few examples. Also try www.motivesys.com.

Cheers,
David Walsh
