Map 3D 2006 Unexpectedly Quits and Disappears

Hey all - I need some help.

I have installed and reinstalled map 3D 2006 more than three times now each time making sure that this is not user error. Whenever I insert an xref or an image I can successfully get it into a drawing but the second I click on anything - a line, the xref, a command button - AutoCAD just disappears.  No "fatal error", no warning message, do not pass go do not collect $200.00.  It literally just closes as if I unplugged it's power source.

These are occasions that this happens:

- Inserting xrefs

- Inserting Images

- File Save As drawings (I can open a dwg and the cntl + s, just fine)

- Opening a drawing after a crash (loads 90% then crashes again)

- Loading or Changing Layer States

If I insert something and then quick save... let it crash and/or close cad completely - When I reopen CAD I can click on anything and move, scale whatever, just fine. 

This is driving my insane. Any advice?
