Lat & Long thought I might try this one here

I am in Australia
Can any one tell me how to input a location given to me as:
S 36deg14'31"
E 147deg10'10"
I need to locate a building in this location on a .dwg plan (a land title layout of a region) that was sent to me by a a town planning consultant.
I would attach the file but it is 4mb & will take some time to upload.

Cheers Dermot

First thing is you have to make sure that the dwg was created in a known
coordinate system and not just a scanned map converted to a vector format.
Once you know that assign that coordinate system to your dwg and use the
"Track coordinates" tool to input the location. (with out the S & E)

Dermot,

have a look whether http://usa.autodesk.com/getdoc/id=TS73801 helps you.

James it is a true .dwg file, so my ACA 2008 tells me.
I am not sure that ACA has "track coordinates"
I just need to plot one point on the map so that I can give the building a true (ish) dimension for a planning application.
I am just downloading Snag it & I will then be able to give you a screen shot of the cordinate system in use in the file.

Attached are the coordinates at the bottom of the .dwg I have had sent to me.

Thanks Marion
That is good, but I just need a point at
S 36deg14'31"
E 147deg10'10"
To start with.
Then I can draw the outline of the building using the method outlined in the link you provided.
I would also like to link it to Google Earth, but I will investigate that in good time as it is not necessary now.

What I meant by a coordinate system was a MAP coordinate system with a datum
(Lat/Lon 83, NAD 83, etc.) If all you have is ACA then there's know way to
tell unless you contact the creator of the dwg. Did you look at Marion's
link? That may be the only way with out MAP3D.

You need to convert the DMS to degree decimals format then just enter that
DD as the input for a point.
For a quick converter: http://vancouver-webpages.com/META/DMS.html
or if you know how to use the q-cal in AutoCAD there may be a way also.

No need for an application just to do a few screen shots. Use the PrintScrn
button your keyboard, paset to Windows Paint and save to PNG.

(James and Marion are much more qualified than I to answer your mapping
question......they won't steer you wrong.)
