Empty layout viewports in plot preview

I have everything set up in my mapbook with the layout. It all looks good...except in the plot preview. All the viewports are empty. And, of course, nothing will plot in the main viewport, key viewport, or the legend viewport. This is not a intuitive process.

The best thing is to run "audit". This command clears up all errors in your drawing. If you have files attached to your current document you have to run audit for every one of them separately and then reload.
The other reason could be that you undeliberately chose "don't plot" in layer manager, look for the printer icon in the layer manager and see if it is marked.
Good luck!

Do you have the template dwg as a seperate file (dwt)?
In the first step of the map book creatation tool did you select model space
or display manager?
