Drawing specific query

Drawing specific query

Howdy all. I have a question for you.

I have a drawing with two drawings attached to it. I would like to set up a
query that will only query objects from one of the drawings. I noticed
under the Options section of the Define Query dialog box there is a
Drawings... button but it appears to edit the drawing status globally and
not for the specific query. Is there a way to do what I want without
setting the drawing status prior to the query? The reason I would like to
do this is I am using wild cards in my query. One of the attached drawings
is the existing survey and the other drawing is the proposed features. I
would like to query in just the proposed roads but since the layer names are
the same for the roads in the existing drawing as well as the proposed
drawing, both sets of layers are queried in and I would like it so I don't
have to manually activate and deactivate the attached drawings.

Thanks for any and all help,

Brian

The MAP help system tells us that the query will draw objects from the first
attached drawing if there are common layers to the source drawings. Thus you
can control which source drawing will be used by the order of attachment.

I am mistaken. The layer definitions will be taken from the 1st drawing, but
the entities will be queried from all active drawings that meet the
criteria.

Neil,

That's what I thought. Oh well, I'll get this query thing figured out
someday.

Brian Hi,

I think that the idea behind the "Query thing" is that you organize your
data in such a way that you can always get your queries to achiev the wanted
outcome.

This means, for example, that different kinds of data are on different
layers. Large datasets are usually broken up either by "Layer" (In the broad
sense: Roads, Pipes, etc.) or "Tiled" (One kind of data broken up
geographicaly).

Furthermore, setting up your Project (Drawing set) can be done in a way that
helps activating or deactivating different parts of a project by modifing
only one drawing (This is done by nesting the attached files).

One more point. When saving your queries to external query files, you are
given the option to keep the list of ACTIVE drawings. This can help you run
a specific query with the exact files needed.

Thanks for the pointers, Arad. I'm constantly learning. From what I've
seen, most of the GIS applications of Map are not beneficial for the common
civil engineer (still not quite sure what a thematic is) but since Land
Development Desktop is built on Map, I'll use as many as will benefit me.

Brian, you are welcome,

I am learning constantly my-self.

There quite a few more very handy tools in Map that can help many AutoCAD
users.

My favorite is the Report mechanism that can help generate any kind of BOM
with ease and speed.

About your question. The Thematic tab in Map Project Workspace is the wizard
for creating "Thematic" maps. The word thematic comes from theme and refers
to a certain subject or property that you want to emphasize in your map. For
example, a map that has all road polylines colored according to repair
status. Now, if you have the repair information attached in an external
database then you will not be able to show it an a regular AutoCAD plot.
With Map you can create a Thematic map that will color each object according
to its attached non-graphical information.

I hope my explanation was helpful,
Arad

Thank you Arad,

I will keep this in mind if I run into a situation I think this would be
helpful for.
