Data Access "Autodesk Geodata"

When I try to connect: "http://www.autodesk.com/geodata"
I have the following message: "Forbidden You Do not Have permission to access / 8 / 84674 / on this server"
Why?

Thank you all for your interest and feedback.  While we certainly continue to be excited by the recent developments in online mapping and imagery available to our customers, and will continue to develop our products, like AutoCAD Map 3D, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and MapGuide, to handle more of this information with every release, due to a lack of activity/interest in the Geodata portal, we decided to move in a different direction and have taken the Geodata portal down.  We are still working with the data providers that were listed on the portal, such as Navteq (ADCi), Intermap and DigitalGlobe.  However, today you will have to contact these data providers directly to acquire data from them. 

As an alternative to purchasing data from the various data providers, with Autodesk MapGuide Enterprise 2011 we delivered built-in capabilities to utilize streaming consumer map services, such as Bing Maps, Yahoo! Maps and Google Maps, as base maps.  And, of course you can always utilize WMS and WFS services within any of the geospatial products to connect to data sources and base maps provided by other organizations (or your own).  This, as you can imagine, opens up a plethora of new opportunities!

When I purchased AutoCad Map 3D, it was stated that there was an abundant supply of free map data on the internet. Where is it?

Where are the servers or where do you find the option to get connected to some servers?

If you search the features within Map3D then look >>>here<<< for an overview, you see one column for WFS (is one type of data, the other is WMS) to go to more details.

Alfred, the Blartyfast question is quite different, I suppose.

He/she doesn't wanna know HOW to load external maps in Autocad, but WHERE those resources are in the Internet.

He/she wants URL addresses, not position of menus, but maybe I'm wrong...

If so ... then it's not a question in an AutoCAD-forum to what URL's have WMS/WFS-servers running 😉

One source for URL's is >>>this<<<, and there are a lot of >>>servers in WWW<<<.

You can find all sorts of data in lots of different locations.  As an example, in the US, every state has some sort of GIS data warehouse (with hugely variable content - it could be everything from demographics to boundaries to aerials and elevations) - Google can help you with this.  Many counties have data, and some cities have downloadable data as well.  On the global scale, the USGS and Natural Earth Data have great information, and they are far from the only options (nor are they Autodesk endorsed).  Look around for the areas you are interested in using GIS, .shp, aerial, .tif or similar keywords and you'll find quite a lot.

thanks for the tips. i was just disturbed when the official Autodesk tutorials had a whole chapter based on the geodata portal and come to find out the portal was removed without any explanation given on the web page.

Might burn some more of the bridge but I say unless you' are with a big enough firm that they can make a profit from you will have trouble getting anything with out cost from the mothership. The little guy is on his/her own.

How about pure heresy here and suggest install the free E$RI "ArcGIS for AutoCAD build 250" plugin- then you can use their ribbon to access world topography and imagery .  note that you have to set a CS from their tool as it doesn't seem to recognize Map3D/C3D assigned CS....

Not everything on these sites are free. But just the orthos from the state site are a good start.

I found a source of free lat/long data for coastlines, political boundaries, rivers, cities etc. at:

www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/coast/    the only problem is the data is ascii text and i need to find out how to massage it so that Map can read it.
