Closed polygons

I have heard that Map will create closed polylines from existing objects. I
have a bunch of property lines that I would like to quickly close for rough
area calcs. I would appreciate if someone would give me a crash course to do
this quickly.

Thanks,

this may not be very quick but lets give it a try.
first you need to go to map>tools>drawing cleanup
here you should have 3 buttons, start at the top and work your way down
first button pick select manually and then click on the select button (or it
will do the entire drawing)
click on ok
click on the object conversion button
here I leave modify original objects cheked and check all the option except
circle to arc
click on ok
click on cleanup options (this one can be tricky)
this is all about the geometry of the drawing (all line must be intersecting
other lines)
stick with the default here and hope it works for you. (you might play with the
tolerance a little.
click on ok
click on proceed
at the command line you will see
modified objects
deleted objects
created objects
I will run the drawing cleanup until it reads 0 (usally) on all of them.

ok.... the next step is to go to map>topology>create
here give it a name and a description and click on link objects
(note: there is a centroid box as well, make sure you have nothing on except
the boundaries when doing this. If you have a single peice of text in each
polygon your ok...Map will use it as a centroid otherwise it will create a
centroid for you (as long as create missing centroid is check)). I also have
highlet errors and mark errors check as well.
ok after picking the link objects button click on select manually and click on
the select button
select the objects
click on proceed
if it worked you will see "topology successfully created"
if not it will show you the errors it found
fix the errors and try again
once the topology is created you can create the closed polygons
go to map>topology>create closed polygons
it should default to the name you gave it
select the layer you want the line to be put in and click on ok

good luck

Thanks DC, I did figure out the process of creating a topology but was not
resourceful enough to use Drawing Cleanup to intersect all of the linework.
I spent a while using a one-point break (call me a chucklehead). I
appreciate the time you put into your response. I just want to confirm one
thing. If the linework is drafted poorly, is the Drawing Cleanup routine the
only way to correct lines & arcs that don't intersect or align? Is there any
tolerance for correction in the topology commands?

Thanks again,
John

I believe that the only place that has the tolerance correction is under the
drawing cleanup routine. But you need to be carefull when increasing the
tolerance or you might end up deleting a short segment that you actually want or
creating a small polygon that you cant see but may affect the total area (we
deal with several square miles of data at one time).

Hi John & Dave,

have you checked out GBound?  it's a program
for creating closed polygons out of Autocad entities.  it's absolutely the
greatest program I have ever used.  it's simple, super fast, and the
quality of closed polygons excellent.  it even marks the points at which
breaks occur, so you can fix them manually.  go to
href="http://www.bergetti.com/">http://www.bergetti.com/
click on Autocad
and then GBound.  you can download a demo version of the program which
works on all releases of Autocad.
