Clipping village out of county

First, I'm new to AutoCAD Map 3D and self teaching myself with supplied tutorials. I am working with shape files of our whole county, which include town lines, road centerlines, Parcels and such. Due to the large file size while moving around with the whole county it causes my AutoCAD to lock up multiple times a day.

Can anyone tell me how to clip out just the village or town I'm working on instead of working with the whole county at once? If the answer is posted somewhere in here please post a link.

Thanks in advance.

If you have your shp files connected through FDO, you can do a spatial query of just the area you want to work in.

Just make sure the files are in the same group except maybe centerlines so you can figure out where you are going. Then Right click the group and go to Data then Query to Filter Data. From there you can decide what kind of information you want to see. if you want to see everything within the city limits, select inside polygon under Locate On Map. then select your city limits.

You can play around with it to make it do what you need.

And if the shp files were imported you can querry through a new drawing file

Query to Filter Data worked great, thanks. Now that I have done that my crosshairs slow down greatly. I actually have to wait a few seconds for my crosshairs to catch up to where I moved my mouse to? Any suggestions for that?

Thanks in advance.

Once you query the data you can save it to a new SDF file and connect to
just that data, unconnect the original shp data.

Ok same here brand new to Map, I used the Connect button on the ribbon to bring in my all my shp files. I got all my styles setup to show the data I want, but the drawing is so slow that it to hard to work in and I want to cut my infomation down to just a small area not the whole county, what is the best way to handle this? You said that if you have your data connected through FDO to do a spatial query, is this what i did when I used the connect and add SHP connection from the ribbon?

When you "Add to Map" you have the option to query it by location at that
time. (Use the drop down arrow next to Add to Map button).
Once you added it without a spatial query, and styled it you can still query
the features by location. Right click on the layer in the display manager it
gives you the option to query, use the locate on map icon and select the
crossing polygon or what ever you need.

Hey Murph,

Thanks so much for the help. That worked for me too. I just had to figure out how to export the layer to SDF. Lot of right click commands I need to learn in Map. It looks like this is what I need to do for my gas utility customer. They have two divisions that draw gas maps, one draws on base AutoCAD the other division draws with Microstation. They want to move to GIS and I think this is the best option for them. Now I have to figure out how to add changes/additions to the gas main shape file.

Once again, thanks for the help.

Another question, what is the command to open up the Map Task pane while you are in C3D?
Thanks

MAPWSPACE
then ON
or if you want it to be on every time you start up C3D go to MAPOPTIONS and
on the Task Pane tab there is a check box to have it open on start up.

When in doubt, Right Click. 🙂 There's a number of different right click
menus that pop up in Map 3D when you right click on different
objects/elements from a line to a feature to parts of the ribbon and screen.
To create or add to a shape file that you connected to with the data connect
you can "Right Click" : ) and select Create > New XXXXX. or right under that
is Create New Feature From Geometry. The create new feature from geometry
will allow you to select autocad objects in the dwg and create a new feature
in the data layer for that those features. Either method will open the
attribute table allowing you to create the attributes for that new feature
appending the existing data. After you create the new feature(s) you will
need to check them in. (another right click option, or on the ribbon)

Thanks for the heads-up about MAPWSPACE command. I couldn't get my MAPOPTIONS to work (either thru the ribbon or key-in). When I typed MAPWSPACE the first time, the screen just blinked at me. I entered it again and got the ON/OFF option. After setting it to ON, I tried MAPOPTIONS again and finally got the dialog box.

Thanks again!
