AutoCad Settings-polylines

I received a dwg and when I go to change the thickness of a polyline - from 0 to lets say 2 (so now in the geometry part of the properties box- the global thickness is 2) the polyline doesn't stay solid - it sort of looks like a rectangular box - i have tried ltscale settings - exploding the polyline and changing it back into a polyline but it doesnt stay solid when changing the thickness - I know it must be some sort of easy setting I am forgetting about - can anyone help? thanks
