View port hide of xref

We are using the plumbing module extensively. We are showing the riser views with the view port in the hide mode. The only problem is that when the architects xrefed background is also in 3d. The building components hide all of our mechanical equipment. Is there a way to show the xref in wire frame and the mechanical in hide.
