Your system is identical to mine except I only have 4 gig of memory and I'm
using Vista. I first tried the 64bit XP and that had problems like you are
experiencing, it was only after moving to Vista that our problems went away.
I don't know if that is an option for you and I can't promise it will solve
your problems, but for us, switching to Vista helped enormously. I have
actually worked on 100 meg drawings without difficulty.

I just had my autocad crash, and lost 45 minutes of work, despite the fact
that i have my computer autosaving every 5 minutes - so i have some
suggestions as to how to improve AutoCAD's save feature.
First, currently, to the best of my knowledge, autosave will attempt to save
at the x-minute mark, and if a command is in progress, it will delay it's
autosave to the next mark. Instead of this, autocad should autosave on the
next available opportunity - as soon as the command in progress is finished.
There should at least be an option for this - maybe include a prompt.
I was somehow able to work on my drawing for 45 minutes, with 5 minute
autosave intervals, and not have the program save even once.
Secondly, when a fatal error occurs, autocad should attempt to save not the
first drawing in the window list, but either the one you have been working
on, or the largest, or based on some other criteria. When autocad crashed,
it successfully autosaved one of my drawings - drawing1.dwg, which is blank.
The other two were not recovered.
I understand that many do not trust the autosave feature. I don't want to
either, however, our new x64 windows operating system doesn't get along with
our nt4 file server, so one in 10 saves will crash my computer, and the
server, making life difficult for others in my office. I am not sure if this
is an autocad issue or not. If anyone has this issue, and has resolved it,
please post and let me know.
I just want to mention, using this system has been a hassle from day one. I
have had crashes every second day, for issues other than the fileserver. I
have no idea what should be done, but i can't wait for an update of some
sort. I am using WinXP Pro x64, AutoCAD MEP 2010 64 bit, on a new intel quad
core computer w/8GB ram, and fx1700. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
