shift to deselect

When I select a group of objects and then would like to deselect a few items withing that group I used to just press the Shift key and window around the object to deselect. Now when I de the same thing with 2013, i make the window while holding the shift key and am only able to deselect 1 item at a time.

I have

Noun and Verb selection

object grouping

implied windowing

all checked in the Selection tab in options. What is going on?
