What do electrical users think?

Hi all, I work for a Building Services Consultancy in New Zealand and just using ABS on a 30 day trial period. I have spent a week so far going through tutorials and trying to get to grips with the whole concept of ABS. There are obviousley a lot of constraints in its usage and application and requires a lot of customisation compared with AutoCAD 2004 which we use at present. Could you Electrical Services guy's give me a quick impression of how you have found ABS to work in the real world of everyday production. I dont like the layout of the panel schedules, can you tell me if the layout is customisable as I have not found anything in the manual to say it is. Also is it possible to have labels on circuits to have identification labels attached to cables that print out with the final layout to indicate which wire belongs to which circuit.

Sorry this is so long but comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

Alan

Hi Alan,

We have just adopted ABS 2004 for electrical and the little
bit of HVAC we do also. I trialled it and got to the point where we just had to
go for it and jump to production use.
The selling point
was integration with our ADT Store design files and to get electrical out of
circle/line technology.

Its early days for us and need to investigate the "cosmetic
look" to get NZ standard blocks etc. I believe there has been some work done in
Australia on this but have to track it down.
As I understand
it the whole switchboard excel link thing is vba based with the intention that
it could be customised for local conditions.

If you want to email off NG or meet happy to hear from
you.

Hi Allan,

There is one Excel based and one AutoCAD based
panel schedule in ABS 2004. Both are VBA applications which means that it is
possible to customize them using the VBA editor in Excel or AutoCAD. It is also
possible to add, remove or change some of the cells in the Excel panel schedule
without doing any changes in the VBA source code. Read more about that in the
user guide for ABS 2004, Panel Schedule, modifying.

If you email an example to me of how you want the
panel schedule to look I can try to give you some help on how to customize it.

Hi again Alan,

I forgot your second question about wire
labels...

Yes, use the Add Label command found on the MEP
tool palette to add labels. The Standard label style will add a label with the
circuit number to the wire.

Alan,

It really depends on what your customers are using. From previous comments in this forum there are some issues when exporting back to older versions. Note some earlier forum comments by performing a search for "Electrical".

Thanks guy's for your comments, thanks Robin and Bo for you offers, if we decide to go with ABS I may take up your offer, and thanks for your input jmc, we have a lot to think about and of course it depends on what our Mechanical Services guy's think.

Alan
