Layer Dialog Functionality

I posted this to ACAD 2004 forum thinking this was an ACAD issue, but a
reply from that group
would indicate it is not an ACAD 2004 problem.

I used to be able to highlight a layer in the layer dialog and then hit a
letter and immediately scroll to that area in the list.
(hit "m" and go to mech layers, "p" plumb., etc.)

Has this functionality been deleted?
Is there another method to accomplish this (without using filters)?

Maybe I'll get used to this, but I prefer the old layer dialog. It was
easier to create new layers and work with layers in the previous version.
Having to figure out the icons is a pain, I never can remember which one is
for new layer.

Thanks for any help.

J. Donahue.

The .layer command will bring up the old dialog box.
