Existing & Demolition Work

Can someone make some best practices, or recommendations for setting up
Building Systems layer/symbology so that it can distiguish between new work
and existing to remain?

As an MEP firm, we sometimes work on projects that contain existing devices
to remain, and or existing devices to be demolished. I would like to setup
Building Systems so that a user can select an option, i.e. system, and have
the devices automatically insert on a existing, or demolition layer. Any
recommondation would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same issues as you. I created a new systems group for Existing, New and Demo under the HVAC Systems Definitions, Piping Systems Definitions, Plumbing System Definitions and Schematic Systems Definitions…whew. You also have to create a matching Layer Key for every system so that the pipe, duct etc.. will have the color and linetype that you specify. I am willing to share this file with anyone interested. I have not created any Electrical Systems Definitions as of yet, but can if anyone is interested. This dwg file can save you an entire days work (maybe more), all you have to do is change the color to suit your color table…..Aaron email: agray2@rochester.rr.com

Rather than create multiple systems for existing
to be removed and existing to remain, we simply place the "new" device or symbol
and then change it's properties with a home-grown AutoLSIP program.  You
simply pick on the object and it will create a new layer with EX (existing) or
ER (existing to be removed) appended to the object's layer name and set's
the color and linetype accordingly.

Just my 2 cents.  It works for us and I
saved a TON of time NOT having to create multiple systems.

Lisp routines are great, but setting up System Definitions is exactly what Building Systems is meant for. Once the definitions have been created you are good to go with your drawings....(my additional 2 cents).

Could you post that file to customer-files or send
it to me directly.  I have all the new systems set up but haven't had a
chance to do existing and demo.  I'm still in the stage of setting up the
software so I don't have a lot of custom content but I would be willing to share
if there is something you are looking for and I have it.

I really wish we could get an ABS content
newsgroup going to be able to share content.  Yes, we can post files to
customer-files but it would be nice to have a group that is just for ABS.
It would be much easier to sort through and find what we
need.  For example, a thread could be started called "Trane
AHU's".  Under this could be a list of model numbers with mvparts.

You can do so in Customer Files by simply heading your subject
line with "ABS - Trane AHUs" for example. Easy to spot.

But not so easy to spot or find a year from now.

Matt,

I was wondering if you could send me the lisp to change layers to existing or existing to be removed. Thanks, I would really appreciate it.

John
