Subject: Design center error on opening
Date:
Tue, 11 Feb 2003 05:22:15 -0800
From:

autodesk.building.systems.3

I seem to have a major problem. This has happened twice in the
last 4 days.
I try to open the design center it takes a long time them I get
an error
which I provided as an attachment. I click ok in the error
dialogue box and
the design center opens then the program crashes and won't open
again. I
have to uninstall and reinstall the program. I am able to access
the network
with all of my other programs but when I try to open ABS it
crashes half way
into loading. I can get on someone elses computer and it will
connect to the
network. any ideas?

Hi John -

No solutions off the top of my head, but I do have some questions...

What is the path that you have specified for design center content. Are you
using design center in "custom" mode where you have access to schedule tags
etc, or just "exploring" other drawings and blocks? Do you generally have a
drive s mapped to the network path specified in the error message? This
"feels" like a network problem and could be a faulty cable, a misbehaving
NIC, or port on the hub.

Now, the fact that you have to uninstall and re-install is a different
problem. You should be able to modify some settings in your registry to
allow ABS to re-load after this happens. If you open your favorite registry
editor and navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R15.0\ACAD-106:409\Profiles\Buil
ding Systems 3\Preferences\AecDCArch and change the path of the
CatalogRootPath string (if that doesn't work, please post back before
re-installing again and I'll see if I can find another key that might work)
to a string that you know you can access (like c:\Program Files). This will
temporarily break all of the "custom" content but you will be able to open
the application again.

Hi Jason
I do have a lot of my content mapped to the network "s" drive
It seems to be just my computer so it probably is a network problem
I have never played around with the registry so you might have to give me a
lot of direction
I assume I can open this with notepad?
Thanks
John

Just another update...

Johns seems to have found the problem. There was evidently a shortcut in his
favorites folder that had become, umm, unhappy, and the shortcut seems to
have been causing this problem. After removing this shortcut the problem
seems to be cleared up.

It would have been much easier if we'd found the shortcut before all of the
other trouble shooting steps, right John??
