AutoCAD MEP Mechanical Duct

I'm working on job with a mechanical contractor and there Drafter is fairly new to MEP. I do electrical so I don't really know much about the mechanical side of things with MEP. I figured I would create a discussion to see if I could help him out a little.

He is trying to draw an exhaust duct in the model. The problem is, is close by there are two peaces of duct. One is supply and the other is return. When he tries to draw in the exhaust for some reason it wants to auto connect the exhaust with the supply or the return. He has turned off MEP snaps to make sure he wasn't snapping to other duct runs. Even with snaps turned off it tries to connect the supply with the exhaust or the return with the exhaust.

Is there anything he can do to get around this? I don't have this problem with electrical.
