2010 causing crashes in 2008 MEP

I am running AutoCAD 2008 MEP. I cannot open, attach as xref, insert as a block 90% of any 2010 files without crashing. This happening on multiple CAD stations
Any clues as to a fix or what causes the problem?
We are running 2008 MEP, and CAD-Duct 3D software.

Thanks,

Michael

2008 and 2010 are different file formats
The supported workflow is to Save As the 2010 file to 2007, exporting/exploding all MEP elements to AutoCAD elements.
