I'm looking for advice, preferences, and recommendations. I work for a
mechanical contractor in PA and I'm wondering if I'm creating my
drawings the best way. I work completely in model space all at full
scale, and create a tab for each drawing that ends up comprising the
project. For example, the middle school I'm currently working on is
made up of 14 drawings on the first floor. I'm laying out my HVAC duct
throughout the entire building in model space, and as I complete the
entire area that is within a particular drawing's boundries, I make a
tab for it. I then send the entire drawing to the other contractors for
coordination, advising them on the tab setup and that these are the only
areas complete for coordination. Is this acceptable, or should I be
saving as... and cutting the drawing apart so even in model space only
the specified drawing shows up? I have a few years experience, I
haven't had any complaints, but I'd like to be sure to streamline the
whole process. Unfortunately, this makes for some large files, even
after purging acad & bs system objects. Thanx in advance for any & all
input and help.

Sounds like you are doing fine with your approach. As long as it is clear
that areas are not finished, it should be good!

You must realize that if you want other contractors to lay their work over
what you have completed, they will not be working in the tab space, but just
like you will want to work in model space. If your model space cuts off
part of a run of a system, then it is poor coordination, because the system
should be followed back to a source. An example would be if the other
contractor was laying out drainage. A small section cannot be coordinated
properly if it isn't laid out from beginning to end. It isn't like a water
line that can be offset easily. The tab layout is fine for setting up dwgs
for plot but it is not a very good method of coordination, all coordination
must be done in Model Space for all contractors.

I agree w/ Mike. When you send file attachments via e-mail for disk other contractors will do any neccassaary editing in model space. Paper space tabs are good for plotting. If you are concerned about that the make sure that you set your viewports accordingly so that your dwg comes out to scale. Calculations make perfect 🙂
